While your physical health may be undergoing some issues, there is something else that is detrimental to your healing – sleep. When your body and mind finally have time at the end of a long day to shut off and recoup. Not getting enough quality sleep can be detrimental to your overall well-being. Sleep is especially important if your body is trying to heal itself from a recent surgery or illness.
Not only is sleep important to your physical health, but it can dramatically affect your mental well-being as well. There are many benefits to keeping your mind well-rested such as increased attention span, better memory, and ability to learn new things. These are all things that can keep you cognitively sharp and ready to tackle whatever the day has in store for you.
You may ask, how much sleep should I really be getting? According to studies conducted by UC Davis, the average adult should be ideally getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night. There may be some who claim that they can get away with less, however, this can lead to relying on caffeine too much and an increased risk of side effects. The number of hours you get is also not the most important thing. Quality of sleep is also important to think about. Getting 7 hours of sleep where you toss and turn can lead you to wake up feeling just as exhausted as when you went to bed.
Here are some tips on how to better your sleep:
- Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and late-night snacks before bed
- Blue light from electronic devices and screens can decrease the amount of melatonin that your body produces. To prevent this you can stop all use of these devices two hours before you want to go to sleep. Your brain can unwind and produce the melatonin needed to give you much-needed rest.
- Create as dark of a space as possible. When there is light present, your brain remains active and stimulated making it much more difficult to fall and stay asleep.
- Keep your body and room temperature on the cooler side. If your body temperature gets too high, you may overheat causing you to wake up throughout the night,
- Establish a consistent bedtime routine and sleep schedule to keep your body on track. Choose a suitable time to go to bed each night and wake up at the same time every morning. It’s also essential to maintain this routine, even on weekends.
Sleep is essential for keeping you energized and ready to take on the day! It’s when your body gets to recharge, repair, and refresh itself. A good night’s sleep helps boost your mood, sharpen your focus, and even strengthen your immune system, keeping you healthier and happier. Plus, sleep is key for memory and learning, so you’ll feel sharper and more productive. When you prioritize rest, you’re setting yourself up for long-term success, both mentally and physically.
